Things to Know About Hides

HAND PICKED:
Every cow hide we sell is hand picked.  First by our supplier ~ she travels to Brazil and Argentina regularly to select the best cowhides available, and then by us. We do not buy bulk shipments that include rejects.  We spend hours sorting thru hides, making every effort to find the very best natural hides.  We want to make your buying experience as pleasant as possible!

DETAILS OF LIFE:
It is not uncommon for hides to have brands & scars. During their life, cattle will encounter barbed wire, other cattle, etc.  Every hide will have interesting details. During the tanning process, every effort is made to conceal these details so your hide will appear as perfect and unblemished as possible, however, patching is necessary  We hand select each cow hide to give you the best quality available.

YOU SEE YOU BUY:
The cow hides shown on this website are the actual hides you are buying. We will not ship you one that is similar, you will receive the hide you see. If more than one person purchases the same hide, the first buyer will get the hide shown and an email will be sent to the others (
your credit card will not be charged)

PROPERLY TANNED HIDES:
All hides are not equal! Chromium tanning produces the best tanned cowhide rug. Every country in the world produces cow hide rugs. When it comes to "Hair-On" Cow hides, it is well known that the best hides are tanned with chromium in Brazil and Argentina. Brazil's tanning process actually produces a softer cow hide rug. Cowhides from other countries are quite stiff in comparison. Many people mistakenly assume that all cow hides make good rugs, and this is not true.  Unfortunately,  people buy a low priced hide only to have it crack and shed in just a few years.

ODOR FREE:
Some manufacturers produce a nice looking hide, but the smell from tanning solutions can be quite offensive.  None of our hides will have an unpleasant smell and they are shipped in a smoke-free environment.

LIFETIME OF ENJOYMENT:
A properly tanned cowhide should not crack or shed, even after heavy usage. The chromium tanning process our manufacturers use allows a properly cared for hide to last a lifetime. Cow Hide Rugs should be vacuumed periodically to remove any loose dirt.  When walked on, dirt in a rug can produce a grinding action and damage your hide.

REGULAR CARE:
Cow Hide Rugs and Pillows require minimal care.  Regular vacuuming is required to remove loose dirt and soap and water on a sponge should clean most spills.  For major cleaning, you may steam clean your hide as long as you DON'T SOAK the leather backing. We recommend a professional carpet cleaner. You may also Scotch Guard your hide.

CUTTING OR TRIMMING:
Our quality, supple Brazilian hides are easy to work with and can be used for drapes, upholstery, chaps, etc.  Hide can be cut with scissors.  If the edge you are cutting will be exposed,  we suggest you use a box cutter and cut from the back or leather side.  Cutting with a box cutter from the back side tends to keep the edges from being so blunt and the hair from appearing "cut".

IRONING YOUR HIDE:
Be very careful to place your cow hide rug flat, especially around furniture legs.  If weight is placed on a fold or wrinkle, this may cause a crease.  If you have a hide that is creased, the hide may be steam ironed from the back or leather side. DO NOT iron the hide directly.  Place a towel between the leather and the iron to protect the hide.  Do not soak the hide in water.

HANGING YOUR HIDE:
Cow hides look beautiful hanging on the wall. You can use a mounting bracket if you choose, but it's simpler and OK to use small tacks or large staples to secure the hide directly to the wall.  Don't be concerned about damaging your cow hide as good quality hides are practically indestructible. Again, quality tanned hides like ours, that are cared for properly, should last you a lifetime!
